Ohio appeals court upholds Honzu conviction

WARREN — The Ohio Eleventh District Court of Appeals upheld the conviction and prison sentence of a sexually violent predator in a 2022 attempted kidnapping case, according to court records.

David Honzu, 66, who is serving separate, consecutive life sentences for multiple convictions, had sought postconviction relief, which the court rejected in a decision released Monday.

Honzu’s latest appeal stemmed from his 2022 conviction involving an attempted kidnapping at a Champion car wash, for which he received a 17-years-to-life sentence.

Two weeks ago, the same appeals court denied his challenge to a 60-years-to-life sentence for a 2007 case involving three counts of kidnapping and two counts of rape in Warren. Both sentences are being served consecutively at the Marion Correctional Institution.

In the latest ruling, Eleventh District Court of Appeals Judges Mary Jane Trapp, Eugene Lucci, and John J. Eklund found Honzu’s claim that the trial court erred by denying his petition without an evidentiary hearing to be without merit.

Honzu was represented by public defenders during his trial, while Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Gabe Wildman handled the state’s case. Assistant Prosecutor Ryan J. Sanders represented the state in the appeal process.

A Trumbull County jury took less than 30 minutes in October 2022 to convict Honzu of five felony charges linked to the 2007 sexual attack on a woman who was walking near the old Powerhouse bar in the city’s northwest section. Common Pleas Judge Ronald J. Rice also found that Honzu is a sexually violent predator and a repeat violent offender, specifications that were attached to the three kidnapping counts and two rape counts that the jury decided.

The woman, according to a nurse’s document read into the record during the trial, reported that she was being followed by an unknown person from the Powerhouse bar as she walked home about 2 a.m. July 29, 2007. She described the man who attacked her as having a long face with facial hair, between 32 and 34 years old, and looking like TV personalty David Letterman.

The man grabbed her and then pulled her from the street.
