Brookfield board approves agreement to buy banquet hall slated for closing

BROOKFIELD — A well-known banquet hall set for closure may see new life as a township school district asset.

The Brookfield Board of Education approved executing a purchase and sale agreement with the owners of Tiffany’s Banquet Center for their building and land at Wednesday’s meeting.

Treasurer Jordan Weber said the banquet center’s owners originally asked $990,000 because of the liquor license and miscellaneous business equipment included with the property.

The board’s offer was $600,000.

“We approached the sellers and said, ‘We really just need the building and land.’ They’re able to transfer the liquor license (and) any equipment they’re able to sell, they’re able to do so,” Weber said. “We have worked out an excellent deal with them, because they said they already have events planned (through) the end of March.”

The school’s administrators will look into getting an architect as their next step, assuming things go as planned and Tiffany’s owners sign off on the agreement, which should happen in the next few days.

Superintendent Toby Gibson said district officials already started conversations about how best to use the building and land.

“Obviously, we’re trying to expand our STEM courses and CTE (Career and Technical Education) courses, so which programs would we be able to expand?” Gibson said. “At the same time, which services would we be able to add, like a primary health clinic or behavioral health care? Those types of conversations.”

Gibson said they’d also like to add a community meeting room, whether it be some conference rooms or a larger space with tables and all-glass doors.

Tiffany’s Banquet Center’s closing date is set for March 12, Weber said. The school board would take possession of the building and land April 30.

“It (the deal) worked really well for our purposes, because of what we’re doing; we’re looking at one- to five-year plans down the road,” Weber said. “Really, kind of long-term projects, that allowed the sellers to still be able to honor the contract.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
