WARREN -- The First United Church of Christ in Warren is beginning the process of repurposing its building as it will be closing and church officials and members want to ensure its legacy.
The "Church with the golden dome" is located at 280 E. Market St, just east of the Social Security office building.
The Rev. Gerald D. Gammon, pastor of the church, said, "Unfortunately, our church will be closing soon and we would like to offer our building to another deserving organization, but we must first see if there is any interest."
Gammon said the current congregation is planning to vacate the building at the end of 2025 and is looking for those interested in occupying the building thereafter.
"To ensure the legacy of the church, preference would be given to other churches, historical organizations and civic organizations," he said.
Gammon said the building has long been a part of downtown Warren. The cornerstone of the structure was laid in 1912.
"It's a beautiful building," he said.
He said the church features stained-glass windows, has three levels, with elevator access to two of the levels, a kitchen and dining area, a stage, a sanctuary with choir loft, three bathrooms on the lowest level and office spaces.
"Its layout and decor are unique. The church has hosted many of Warren's well-known people for Sunday worship, including Neil Armstrong as a boy,'' Gammon said.
Gammon said through the years, the church has been active in the community.
Besides the usual church activities, it was part of the Warren First Night celebration, hosted musical events, and sponsored many drives to provide food, clothing and toys for the Warren Family Mission as part of its outreach program.
