WARREN -- The Community Concerned Citizens II will host its annual Juneteenth celebration Friday and Saturday at Quinby Park, 525 Austin Ave., Warren.
Friday events will be from 1 to 8 p.m. On Saturday, a parade will be begin at 11 a.m. at Grace AME Church in Warren and make its way to Quinby Park.
The parade will travel from First Street, right onto Highland Avenue, left on Oak Street, across Tod Avenue and then right on Austin Avenue to the park.
A ribbon cutting will be at noon at the park followed by speakers and live performances by the True Diversity Dance Team.
The event will include food, handcrafted vendors, raffle baskets and other activities.
This year, the event also will include Pride and Joy Today, various mental health agencies and the city of Warren's leadership and officials.
The event is free.
The local Juneteenth event has been held for 22 years and was started by Mary Ann Franklin, 97.
Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is celebrated annually to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. It was on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War.
In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.
