WARREN -- Police are investigating a Wednesday night shooting on the city's northwest side that sent one person to the hospital.
A city police report states the victim, Kiaeem Williams, age not disclosed, was taken to Trumbull Regional Medical Center in a private vehicle with what police say are nonlife-threatening injuries.
A news release states officers responded after 9 p.m. to the 2300 block of Stephens Avenue for a shooting. Officers found the area littered with shell casings. Police said children were playing in the front yard in the direct line of fire during the incident.
The victim refused to cooperate with the investigation "despite the risk placed on the community and neighborhood filled with young children," the release states. Officers are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Warren Safety Service Director Eddie Colbert said "people cannot tolerate people who terrorize neighborhoods."
"The problem will only perpetuate if this is allowed. The best tool the police department has in their tool box is the community," he said, adding that cooperation between the community and police is essential when addressing violence.
"We are seeing more cooperation from the community, and we need that to continue. We need victims and witnesses who know who the perpetrators are to help with that investigation. We do not want to see any shots fired or anyone hit by shots and we don't want to see any loss of life," Colbert said.
Colbert said the city will continue to use law enforcement, partners at Warren City Schools and support any programs to help people.
"This comes down to individuals making better decisions. We hear of situations like this across the country. The police department has ways of collecting information from a witness or to help a victim," he said.
Wednesday's shooting was one of several recent violent incidents on the city's northwest side.
The second homicide victim in 2024 in Warren, Howard Dorsey, 35, was shot and killed April 9 at a home at 1028 Lovers Lane NW.
Nathaniel Bradley, 20, became the city's third homicide victim after he was shot and killed in the early morning of May 13 at Park Place 24 Tavern, 2185 Parkman Road NW.
Police have not made an arrest in connection to Dorsey's death, but they did arrest Zaa-Von Hameed, 26, in connection to the shooting death of Bradley.
