BROOKFIELD -- The Brookfield Local School District has hired two new contractors to help complete upgrades at its athletic complex.
An additional press box is set to be installed in mid-July. The current press box will be moved to the visitors side of the stadium prior to the building of the new press box, which will be on the home side.
Brookfield Treasurer Jordan Weber said he and the school board hired Baker Bednar Snyder and Associates Inc. to perform a structural engineering proposal for $18,500 and Kirila Contractors, Inc. for plumbing services for less than $10,000.
"They (Baker Bednar Snyder) are reviewing plans that Kirila has so we had to hire them on to assist with reviewing the plans to make sure they're good from an occupancy perspective," Weber said.
Weber said the reason for relocating and upgrading the stadium was because of safety and structural concerns. The football team previously played at George Nicholas Field, 900 Judson Road, Masury, which is fewer than 3 miles from the high school.
"Outside of that, other things we're looking at are just taking advantage of our actual campus here," Weber said. "That's (the current stadium) quite a ways away, so if a kid wanted to get there after school to go to a game or get to practice, there's not really any way to get there from here."
Weber said he and the school board chose Baker Bednar Snyder due to their "expertise and their ability to jump in with such short notice.
"We were in a crunch for time and thankfully they were available and we are very thankful for their expertise and (for) helping with the project," he said.
He said he and the school board chose Kirila Contractors because of "their knowledge of the area and their availability to come here and do that job on a very quick notice."
The press box will be built by Kirila Fire, according to Weber.
"They (Kirila Fire) specialize in making fire training apparatuses and one of the things they started doing is making their structures out of shipping containers," he said. "We contacted them in January and it's actually going to save us a lot of money and it's going to be bigger. It's actually two, 40-foot shipping containers on top of each other and they'll be hooked to the bleachers."
He said the bleachers, the lights and the press box are all that remain before the project is complete.
