WARREN -- Reporting they discovered unsanitary conditions in a South Street SE apartment, city police removed a toddler from the home Friday and placed two people under arrest.
Bond for Adrianna Bellar, 27, and Zackary Woomer, 25, was set at $5,000 each after appearing Friday in Warren Municipal Court before Judge Natasha K. Natale. Both pleaded not guilty to a single charge each of misdemeanor child endangering during their arraignment.
The judge ordered that the two will not have contact with children and are required to cooperate with Trumbull County Children Services. Both will appear in court Aug. 13, court records show.
A city police report states a caller tipped off police that the apartment had "mice and feces all over the walls and floor."
Around 12:25 a.m. Friday, police were dispatched to the South Street SE apartment to check the welfare of a 3-year-old.
Officers said "a foul odor of feces" emanated from outside the apartment door, and they observed insects crawling around the cracks of the door.
Bellar allowed police entry and they observed trash covering the ground, counters and shelves, including spoiled food, the report states.
The carpet and flooring had feces matted into it, and police said it was unavoidable to take a step without encountering it.
Police said they then came in contact with Woomer wearing only underwear as he stood barefoot in feces. He directed police to the room of the child as he navigated them through the clutter as officers shined a flashlight that revealed bugs flying in their faces and crawling along the walls, the report states.
Officers discovered the child on a bare mattress surrounded by trash. The report states police evacuated the apartment while they spoke to Bellar. Officers said she blamed the unsanitary conditions on her neighbors.
Bellar and Woomer were placed under arrest and transported to the Trumbull County jail.
Police said the child was placed into the grandmother's custody.
