Southington approves new contract for superintendent
SOUTHINGTON — The Board of Education has approved a new two-year contract for Superintendent Rocco Nero effective Aug. 1.
Nero officially resigned as superintendent effective June 30, and after a month of not working for the district, was approved to be rehired Aug. 1 to July 31, 2026.
Nero will work on a 210-day contract at a daily rate of $458 per day.
In 2021, the board approved a three-year contract for Nero.
Nero was previously paid $94,992 for 240 days as superintendent and high school principal for the district.
In other business at Tuesday’s board meeting the board entered into an agreement with the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office to provide security for the schools at $63,578 for the 2024-25 school year.
The district has used the service of the sheriff’s department for an officer on the school campus for the past few years.
The board also recognized two seniors with special awards.
Ava Westenfelder was presented with the Award of Excellence, noting she has distinguished herself in many academic pursuits.
Elizabeth Smallsreed was presented the Mary Herner Leadership Award for exemplifying leadership characteristics in school and personal life. The award honors Herner, who served 28 years as a board of education member,
• Entered into an agreement with Graphic Detail Inc. at $41,910 for the programmable school sign.
• Set graduation for 7 p.m. May 23 in the school complex gymnasium.
