GREENE -- Ohio Auditor Keith Faber's office has issued a finding for recovery for over $46,000 against two former Greene Township fiscal officers.
The finding was due to late fees and interest according to a news release.
The report said Sandra Detchon and Yevonne Postlethwait and their bonding companies are "jointly and severally liable for the finding," which was included in an audit of the township's finances from Jan. 1, 2020, through Dec. 31, 2021.
During each fiscal officer's term, failure to remit withholdings resulted in late fees and interest which was paid to the Ohio Bureau of Workmans Compensation, the IRS, the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System and the Ohio Income Tax.
Greene was also assessed a stale dated check charge of $10 deposited in their account.
According to the documents, $15,211 of the total $46,337 listed in the finding for recovery was spent under Detchon. The other $31,126 was spent under Postlethwait.
The unnecessary payments and fees date back to 2012.
According to the report, "Governmental entities may not make expenditures of public monies unless they are for a valid public purpose," and "Paying late fees and penalties that could have been avoided by remitting withholdings on time does not qualify as expenditure of funds for a public purpose."
