GIRARD -- A trial date for a former Youngstown City School District administrator and high school basketball coach accused of assaulting a female victim has been scheduled for October.
Chivas Whipple, 41, faces misdemeanor charges of domestic violence and criminal damage or endangering in Girard Municipal Court.
Ahead of the Oct. 3 trial date, Whipple has a final pretrial hearing scheduled for Sept. 12.
He pleaded not guilty Feb. 27 before Judge Jeffrey Adler and was released on a $5,000 bond. Adler ordered Whipple to take anger management classes and have no contact with the victim.
The charges against Whipple stem from an incident in February that was caught on video at an Anderson Morris Road home. The video shows a man approach, grab and push the girl.
According to a Liberty police report, the dispute began when the girl, who was supposed to be staying at a relative's house, was allowed by a guardian to stay with her boyfriend until she was picked up. When Whipple arrived at the home, the victim told police, "He came out of his car and grabbed me and threw me around. ... I knew he was gonna do that because that's just how he is," according to the report.
Video shows the victim trying to explain the situation to the man before he is seen grabbing and pushing her against the vehicle and then throwing her to the ground.
The victim's boyfriend was then seen in the video stepping out of the house as the man approached him and screamed at him before he focused his attention back on the girl.
When interviewed, police said Whipple excitedly told them, "I whooped her (expletive) right here."
In April, the district's school board confirmed that Whipple's contract was not renewed for the next school year amid a plan to reduce costs through budgetary revisions and personnel cuts.
