City man reports fraudulent purchase on Facebook

WARREN — A Warren man was reportedly scammed out of $1,600 after trying to buy a tractor off Facebook Marketplace.

According to a Warren police report, the man, whose age was redacted, said Saturday he attempted to purchase a tractor that was being sold by a seller in Valdosta, Georgia, for $800.

An agreement was made between the two parties that the payment would be made using eBay gift cards.

Instructed by the seller, the Warren man purchased the gift cards and relayed the card numbers to the seller.

On Wednesday, the man said the seller requested an additional $800 to foot the bill for shipping and insurance costs, again asking that the payment be made using either eBay or Apple gift cards.

Upon completing the transaction, the man said his suspicions rose of the sales legitimacy.

When he looked up the seller’s address it traced back to an empty grass lot.
