WARREN -- Former city police officer Michael Edwards Jr. has been indicted by a Trumbull County grand jury on a slew of felony charges that include rape, extortion and sexual battery.
On Monday, Edwards, 43, will appear before Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Cynthia Rice for an arraignment on 14 charges, most of which are felonies.
The case will be handled on behalf of the state by Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Gabe Wildman.
Edwards' bond of $750,000, which was set by Warren Municipal Judge Patty Knepp, will be continued.
Police Chief Eric Merkel said during a January news conference that a victim from Warren reported an "inappropriate relationship" with Edwards.
Shortly afterward, Merkel said the department reported the criminal complaint to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
BCI then began an investigation, leading to the arrest of Edwards on two counts of rape and two counts of aggravated burglary with firearm specifications, the chief said.
An indictment released Friday reveals the former officer faces several felony charges.
The list of charges includes three counts of first-degree rape; two counts of third-degree extortion; one count of third-degree sexual battery; four counts of gross sexual imposition; two counts of theft in office; and two misdemeanor charges of dereliction of duty. Two victims were listed on the indictment identified by only two sets of initials.
During that same January news conference, Merkel said it was the department's belief at that time that the criminal charges were a "one-time" incident, but the chief urged others who might have encountered Edwards to come forward.
Court records indicate subpoenas have been issued to cellphone provider T-Mobile served by Edwards' Cleveland-based attorney, Dominic J. Vitantonio.
Additionally, subpoenas were issued to Trumbull County Sheriff Paul Monroe, requesting all audio recordings of calls made to former county jail inmate Matthew Summerfield and inmate communications involving Summerfield through an app called, "Get Out," court records state.
The phone app can be used by friends and family of those incarcerated to send messages, photos and make deposits.
County jail records show Summerfield last was incarcerated from Nov. 11 and released on Feb. 20 of this year after being arrested by Warren police on charges of escape, drug possession and aggravated trespass.
