BROOKFIELD -- The board of education announced Wednesday a project to relocate and upgrade the school district's football stadium.
The stadium, which is on Addison and Judson roads, will be moved to the school's campus on Bedford Road, according to district Treasurer Jordan Weber.
He said the stadium will be moved to the current soccer field, which will be used for soccer and football. Weber said the board made the decision due to safety and structural problems, and the stadium not being up to date.
"Outside of that, other things we're looking at are just taking advantage of our actual campus here," he said. "That's (the current stadium) quite a ways away, so if a kid wanted to get there after school to go to a game or get to a practice, there's not really any way to get there from here."
Upgrades will be made to the football stadium once it is combined with the soccer field.
Weber said a bigger, newer press box is one of the upgrades the district plans to make for phase one of the project. The new press box will be 40 feet and include a level for storage.
"For a football game, you really need a press box on each side, so we wanted a bigger press box on the home side," he said. "We're taking the existing one (and) moving it to the new visitor's side and getting a new, bigger one for the home side."
He said other upgrades for phase one of the project will include extending the bleachers and adding new lighting.
The bleachers and the press box will cost $430,360 and the lighting will cost $320,000.
Weber said the first phase of the project will start over the summer and will be finished in late August.
In other business, board members announced they are going to upgrade the bus garage.
Weber said the district will add fencing, repair the roof and do electrical work on the bus garage.
"The roof blew off last spring so this is getting a much needed upgrade," he said "The electrical is just kind of out of date and just needs a refresh with some extra electrical for the buses and the fence is for security reasons."
He said the repairs to the bus garage will cost roughly $70,000. The money will come from the district's general fund.
