WARREN -- An offer was extended by Ohio Congresswoman Shontel Brown inviting Annette Watts to be a guest at the State of the Union address next week.
Annette Watts is the mother of Brittany Watts, the Warren woman whose case drew national attention when it was considered for indictment by a grand jury after she had a miscarriage in her home.
Annette Watts will join her daughter, who recently was invited by Ohio Congresswoman Joyce Beatty to the March 7 address.
Reproductive Rights advocates supported Brittany Watts in the national spotlight, fearing that her case might set a precedent for the future criminalization of pregnant women in the country post-Roe v. Wade, which was overturned in June 2022.
Brittany Watts was charged with a felony after her September 2023 miscarriage and a Trumbull County grand jury declined to pursue criminal charges against her after reviewing her case.
In a statement, Brown said, "Brittany Watts and her family have shown unbelievable strength. They've gone through hell, quite honestly, because of the radical anti-woman ideology that would go so far as to criminalize a miscarriage. But instead of backing down, Brittany and her family have spoken out, because what happened to her can happen to anyone when a radical agenda makes receiving health care a crime. I'm proud to give Annette Watts my guest ticket so she can join her daughter at the State of the Union, and proud to join Congresswoman Beatty in highlighting Brittany Watts, her family, and her story."
