WARREN — Ansley Davenport, a security guard at Trumbull Regional Medical Center, was honored Monday by coworkers and the Warren mayor after going above and beyond for a patient.

Davenport noticed a patient Wednesday night leaving the emergency room not wearing shoes. Upon speaking to the patient, Davenport learned the patient didn’t own shoes so Davenport offered his own.

“He was actually in the hospital because his feet were hurting, and I looked at his feet and I looked at him and said, ‘You know, you need these shoes more than I do,'” Davenport said. “I said, you know, this would be the godly thing to do. I got plenty (of shoes) at home.”

He said he has worked at the hospital for seven months. He works part-time at the hospital while obtaining a criminal justice degree from Kent State.

Davenport said he graduates next semester and plans to continue working at the hospital.

“I enjoy making people smile,” he said. “When a lot of older people come in and they are nervous or scared, I tend to make them laugh.”

He was given a plaque and a $100 Visa gift card from the hospital’s security manager, Steven Johnson.

Johnson said Davenport has always made sure that patients are as comfortable as possible when they come to the hospital and goes out of his way to help them.

“Anyone that comes in the ER to be seen, he’s very kind and understanding to them,” Johnson said. “He will help anyone, whether it’s a 2-year-old walking around who might need something or an 80-year-old who might need a wheelchair. He’s a very, very compassionate person.”

Warren Mayor Doug Franklin also presented Davenport with a plaque.

“It’s not every day I get to do cool things like this and honor people who really contribute to show these selfless acts of heroism,” Franklin said before presenting the plaque to Davenport. “I don’t think we honor those who go above and beyond the call of duty as much as we should.”

Johnson said Davenport’s acts of kindness have a positive influence on others.

“It makes me feel good because he’s a valuable part of our team,” he said. “You know, we’re security but we also want to have that compassion and want to help people, and that’s what we try to do here at Trumbull, not just security, but everyone, every department that’s here.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
