Warren man facing charges in alleged kidnapping case

WARREN -- A man accused of kidnapping his girlfriend faces charges in Warren Municipal Court.

Curtis Lee Redd, 38, of Warren, appeared via video arraignment Monday during which he pleaded not guilty to charges of menacing, strangulation, assault and kidnapping.

His next court date is set for municipal court on Jan. 29 at 1:30 p.m. in Judge Patricia Knepp's courtroom.

Redd was arrested Sunday after a welfare check on his girlfriend by Warren police officers. Another involved person listed in the report as the victim's friend made the call to Redd's residence after the victim told her that Redd had assaulted her.

The caller told officers that Redd and the victim were in a black Hyundai in the driveway of a Kenilworth Avenue residence. An officer noted in the report that when he arrived about 3 p.m., the previously described car was not there.

Another involved man answered a door at the residence, and when asked about Redd and the victim's whereabouts, he told an officer he wasn't sure if "things were okay" between them, the report states.

The report states, "He didn't know of any fighting or arguing going on. I advised him to call us if they came back," until dispatch advised an officer that the victim's friend explained that they kept track of each other's location.

The involved woman told police that Redd and the victim were heading toward Highland Avenue SW, and that they then went into Highland Terrace Apartments.

Redd's vehicle eventually was spotted by another officer, the report states. Once pulled over, he was identified as the driver, and the passenger as the victim. When the victim was asked what happened, an officer reported, she said there was an argument between her and Redd. The police report mentioned she was shaking, but she told an officer it was because she was cold.

"The victim had a winter jacket, jeans and Nike slides," the officer wrote. "I told her that I'm cold too, but I wasn't shaking like she was. I did not have a jacket on during this call. The only cold weather gear that I had on was base layers under my uniform. The base layers I had on were thin."

She told the officer that her friend called and said she was assaulted because she was "mad at Redd." When questioned about facial swelling and scratches on her neck that looked fresh, she told him that her injuries were from a fight at Up a Creek Tavern at 4793 E. Market St. the night before, the officer wrote.

After reviewing video from his body camera, the officer stated that he noticed the victim whisper that she was scared during an initial interview. Dispatch alerted the officer that there were no calls for a fight at Up a Creek Tavern during the time the victim told him.

The victim later revealed to police her injuries occurred from Redd hitting her.

"She said that they got in an argument around 2 a.m. because she was drinking," the report continued. "She tried to get out of the car to get away from him, but he started choking her. He wouldn't let her get out of the car. Around 11 a.m. she wanted to leave, but he wouldn't let her leave."

Redd withheld the victim's car keys from her, and forced her into his car by dragging her by her hair. Once they were in the car, she told an officer, he started hitting her in the face. "He then drove her around all day, and every time she tried to get out of the car, he hit her."

Near the end of the report, the officer wrote that the victim also alleged Redd had been hitting her and threatening her "all day."

"He threatened to take her down a back road and shoot her," the police report states. "He also threatened to leave her stranded on the highway."

Officers observed that the victim had a nail tear off while trying to stop Redd from strangling her.

"She told you all I hit her? She did not tell you all that," Redd asked the officers while being arrested.

Redd was booked in the Trumbull County jail, and is being held without bond, according to Warren Municipal Court records. A temporary protection order also has been issued against Redd, for the victim.
