Report weighs in on infant death

WARREN — The mother of an infant boy who died in October has been indicted on an involuntary manslaughter charge after investigators say her son’s death was caused by him ingesting his mother’s prescription methadone.

The Trumbull County grand jury report released Thursday brought about an indictment on 32-year-old Aris J. Rice of Warren, on charges of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and third-degree endangering children in the death of her 20-month old son.

Rice initially was charged with reckless homicide but the grand jury determined there was not enough evidence to proceed with that criminal charge.

Rice’s case will be bound over to the Trumbull County Court of Common Pleas and she is expected to be arraigned in the coming weeks.

On Sept. 24, police responded to the 1900 block of South Feederle Drive SE, where they found the infant on his back and not breathing. Officers began chest compressions.

An ambulance arrived and EMTs provided further medical attention.

Rice told police her son begun throwing up around 7 p.m. the night prior.

Rice told officers her child had been crying repeatedly, and she was trying to keep him calm. She said the child had a temperature of 99 degrees earlier Sept. 24.

Starting at $3.23/week.
