NILES -- The city and its parks and recreation department are seeking applicants for its Hometown Hero banner program.
About 120 spots for banners are available. The fee is $130 per banner and the first 120 fully paid and completed applications received will be placed in 2024, according to a news release from the city.
The deadline to submit a completed application form, with payment and a high-resolution photo of the veteran or active service member is Feb. 28.
Applications can be found on the city's website or picked up at the wellness center or city hall.
This is the fourth year of the Hometown Hero program. The program regularly places more than 100 banners honoring local military personnel and veterans on poles throughout the city.
Each banner honors one veteran or a person actively serving in the military. Each banner measures 30 inches by 60 inches and is double sided.
The banners include a picture of the current or former service member along with their name and branch of service as well as the name of the banner sponsor.
The banners are displayed from Memorial Day through Veterans Day.
After Veterans Day, the banners can be picked up by the sponsors at the Wellness Center.
"We've had full participation from day one and we're very proud of this program," Niles Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz said. "It's a phenomenal way to honor those veterans who are currently serving and it is a way to remember the past veterans in the city of Niles."
