NEWTON TOWNSHIP -- Township trustees have approved a 3% pay increase for employees of the road, cemetery and zoning departments.
As part of the pay increases, the road supervisor / cemetery sexton will now make $23.64 per hour, road / cemetery maintenance workers will earn $21.10 per hour and part-time road workers will make $18 per hour with no benefits.
For the zoning department, the zoning inspector will make $772.50 per month and the zoning secretary will make $16.39 per hour.
In other matters, trustees reviewed projects completed in 2023 and what is ahead for the new year.
Trustee Chairman Pete Augusta said the widening and paving of Grand Boulevard was completed, along with the paving of Grant Avenue.
Officials said the township has secured an Ohio Public Works Commission grant for paving a section of Salt Springs Road. Augusta said Newton Falls Village also has secured funds for the next phase of the Scott Street storm sewer project, which will benefit both the village and township.
He said the township also was able to demolish two homes in the community with American Rescue Plan funds. There are seven additional properties in poor condition that have been submitted for demolition in 2024.
Other projects completed last year include paving the township administration building parking lot, fencing installed around the recycling center and a backhoe and mower were purchased for $120,000 and $12,500, respectively.
