HUBBARD -- The Hubbard City Police Department presented the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project with a donation after winning a competition against the Eagle Joint Fire District.
The competition was hosted by the Hubbard McDonald's and encouraged each competitor to pick a drink of choice. The fire department chose a lime-flavored drink while the police department chose a blue raspberry-flavored drink. Whichever drink proved to be most popular identified the winner and whomever won got to give a donation to a charity of their choice.
Jason Cooke, director and founder of the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project in Brookfield, said he received a donation of $250 on Thursday.
"Yesterday when I was picking up a stray dog in Hubbard, we went back to the police station and they presented this donation," he said. "The dog's owner came forward a short while later and Misty (the dog) got reunited with her family."
He also said the money was supplied by McDonald's.
Cooke said the money from the donation will be used to aid in the construction of the new Warren shelter for the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project.
"We're just so thankful we were chosen by the police department to be a beneficiary of that donation," he said. "The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project is always happy to work with the Hubbard City Police Department to reunite dogs like Misty with their owners and we hope to continue working with them."
He also said the competition took place through the month of August.
Eagle Joint Fire District Chief Ron Stanish said if the fire department had won, they would have donated to the Hubbard Youth Coalition.
He said he first learned of the competition from the fire department administrator.
"I thought it would be a cool thing to do," Stanish said. "I thought it was a friendly competition and it goes to a good cause."
He said he reached out to the Hubbard City Police Department after hearing about the competition.
