Brookfield baker rises in national tournament
BROOKFIELD — A township baker has advanced to the final round of “The Greatest Baker 2023” national competition.
Alisha Davis, owner of Sweet Tooth To Go in Brookfield, is among the top seven contenders in the finals.
If she wins, Davis will take home $10,000, be featured in a Baked from Scratch Magazine spread and meet the “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro, who also presents “The Greatest Baker” competition. The competition is run by Colossal, a professional fundraising organization.
“This will really help me start looking for a house for myself and my daughter, one where I could have an extra kitchen to dedicate to my home bakery,” she said.
She said she has been baking since she was a child.
“I started baking with my grandma, my aunt and my mom,” Davis said. “We were always in the kitchen together. They always included the kids.”
Davis said when she reached her 20s, she began baking cakes.
“I was in art club in high school,” she said. “I’ve always liked art and baking cakes is art to me. I learned from YouTube tutorials and the people you see on TV.”
She said she started her business by selling to friends and family.
“I got busier and busier so I registered with the state,” she said. “You register with the state so you are recognized as a business and so nobody else takes your name.”
Davis said she offers specialty cakes, regular cakes, cupcakes, cake pops and cookies.
“I do gourmet cookies,” she said. “I started doing those when I started doing the farmers markets. I do different flavors like chocolate chip. S’mores is my bestseller right now.”
She said her first time baking a gourmet cake was for her 30th birthday.
“I wanted a big, fancy cake for my 30th birthday, and I couldn’t afford one so I made one and it turned out really well,” Davis said. “It was a two-tier.”
Davis said although she started off baking cakes, cookies are her favorite thing to bake.
“The cookies are fun because (they’re) creative,” she said. “If something sounds good you try it out and sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.”
Voting for “The Greatest Baker 2023” ends at 7 p.m. Thursday. The link to vote for Davis is at greatestbaker.com/2023/alisha-davis.
