NILES -- Police picked up a Niles man Wednesday wanted on a robbery charge after a series of incidents at a local Family Dollar two weeks ago.
Daniel Campbell, 43, was booked into the Trumbull County jail Wednesday after Niles police arrested him on a warrant originally issued Dec. 20.
Campbell is in police custody with no bond, awaiting a pretrial scheduled for Jan. 3 in Niles Municipal Court.
On Dec. 15, police were dispatched to Family Dollar, 231 N. Main St., in reference to a shoplifting incident. An officer stated in their report that officers were told that a male had taken items from the store about 5:30 p.m. without paying.
When stopped by employees, the suspect started a physical altercation, according to the report. The employee who was involved in the fight said Campbell had been in the store multiple times throughout the day. According to the report, the employee stated that he stopped Campbell earlier in the day, suspecting him of theft. At the time, Campbell was not found to have any stolen merchandise, however, other employees believed he had items concealed.
The report stated Campbell returned to the store around 5:50 p.m. claiming that he lost a card and was looking for it. Employees told him that he was banned. He then became agitated and began arguing with employees prior to leaving.
Approximately 8:06 p.m., the report continued, Campbell re-entered the store, and said he knew the card was missing in the store. After walking through the store, Campbell then approached the front counter, shook an employee's hand and apologized for his earlier actions.
Employees alleged that they told him it was "OK," and that they did not want to have to call the police on him. Upon telling him this, Campbell became agitated and stated that "if they were going to call the police anyway, he might as well take some merchandise," the report stated.
Campbell began grabbing boxes off of the front counter, which consisted of sports and Pokemon cards. He then walked past the registers toward the door.
As employees attempted to stop Campbell, an officer wrote, the employee who earlier approached him tried to grab the merchandise from him.
The employee was then allegedly pushed and punched by Campbell, until he pushed the suspect out to the parking lot. Campbell then got into a white van and left in an unknown direction.
Police reviewed surveillance footage that showed Campbell grabbing items and assaulting the employee. Photos gathered from the footage led officers to an arrest.
