WARREN -- A Warren woman got a second chance recently after she was sentenced to three years of probation and was accepted into the Women's Therapeutic Docket in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
The docket is an all women program established by Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Cynthia W. Rice to help steer women arrested on drug-related offenses or in scenarios where their drug use or mental health factored into their arrest back on the right path.
Earlier this year, police arrested La'Quisha Dukes, 31, on a second-degree felonious assault charge from a February fight that took place at Hampshire House apartments on Fifth Street SW.
A police report detailing the assault states when officers arrived they observed the woman victim's floor "covered with blood."
She had a towel wrapped around her hand and officers said blood still was managing to soak through. She was taken by ambulance to Trumbull Regional Medical Center.
The woman told police she was asleep in her apartment around 7 a.m. when she was awakened by "loud pounding on her door." The report states she checked the peep hole, where she saw a woman, identified as Dukes, but couldn't understand what she was saying.
When she opened the door, Dukes began demanding information about a man named "Scoob." When she told Dukes nobody was in the home, Dukes grew angrier and accused her of lying.
Dukes began punching the woman, who raised her hands to defend herself. She felt a punch to her left hand but didn't realize until afterward that Dukes was armed with a piece of glass, the report states.
The victim fled her apartment and yelled for help. She returned to her apartment and called police after Dukes fled.
Since then, defense attorney ShaRay Lewis said Dukes has been involved with Spero Health, a drug and alcohol treatment facility in Warren and has been accepted into the Women's Therapeutic Docket as a sanction.
"Mrs. Dukes, I will tell you that your attorney did a very nice job of your sentencing memorandum and making your position very clear about where you're at right now with your treatment and how compliant you are," Rice said during Wednesday's sentencing hearing.
