Canton woman to pay restitution for coin theft

1 min read

WARREN -- A Canton woman was given five years probation after pleading guilty to stealing 20 pounds of silver coins worth thousands of dollars.

Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Ronald Rice had the option to sentence Chi Thi Pham, 48, to anywhere between six and 18 months, after she pleaded to a single charge of grand theft, a fourth-degree felony. Instead, Rice opted for probation and thousands of dollars in restitution costs to resolve the matter.

All parties involved in the matter agreed on a restitution amount of $18,601.96.

Attorney Ross Smith said his client has paid back a significant portion of the restitution costs with a balance remaining of $9,433.16, which she'll pay in monthly installments of $262.

Pham had been doing housework at a home on Corey Hunt Road in Bristol Township when she took three sugar containers containing about 20 pounds worth of U.S. quarters that had silver content, according to a sheriff's office report.

Last time Pham appeared in court, Rice insisted restitution paid by the victim had to be at the market price for an ounce of silver at the time of conviction.
