WEATHERSFIELD -- Authorities are investigating the discovery of an unidentified body in a wooded area off Salt Springs Road in Weathersfield.
The area where the body was found is being treated as a crime scene, and authorities are treating the incident as a homicide.
Earlier this week, Trumbull County Sheriff Paul Monroe said his office was contacted by the Struthers Police Department that was working in tandem with Youngstown police on a missing person's case. They had received a tip about a possible body being dumped.
A detective with the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office met with Struthers police along Salt Springs Road, began a foot search of the heavily wooded area and discovered the body.
The body is being considered as a "John Doe" at the moment, but Monroe said it's not gender specific. Given the state of the "badly" decomposed remains, the sheriff said the remains could've been there for "more than a year."
As of now, the body is being examined by the Trumbull County Coroner's office to make a positive determination on who the body is.
An ID of the body could take time, Monroe said as a forensic pathologist works to determine what information can be collected from dental and DNA samples.
It is believed by authorities that the body is that of a missing person from Mahoning County.
The sheriff said his deputies will work closely with law enforcement from Struthers, Youngstown and Weathersfield as the investigation continues.
