VIENNA -- Baker Elementary School hosted a Veterans Day ceremony on Friday, paying tribute to the brave men and women who have served our country.
The ceremony featured Army veterans Jeffrey Dreves and Mark Thompson, who shared their experiences with students in grades 3 through 5.
Students had the opportunity to engage directly with the honored guests, asking questions and gaining insights into the lives of those who served their country. Dreves and Thompson, both members of the Vienna VFW Post 3521, shared stories of their time serving in Vietnam.
"We believe it's essential for our students to understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by our veterans. Hosting events like these not only instills a sense of patriotism but also encourages empathy and respect for those who have served our country," said Mike King, principal of Baker Elementary School.
Baker Elementary school counselor Rhonda Hillard presented the veterans with handmade thank-you cards crafted by the students, which were distributed to the VFW. To conclude the ceremony, Superintendent Russell McQuaide performed taps on his trumpet.
