Storage building OK’d in Champion

By Bob Coupland 2 min read

CHAMPION -- Township trustees have approved a $335,400 contract with Master Renovations Inc. in Orville for construction of a storage building for road department equipment and vehicles.

Trustee Rex Fee said at Monday's meeting that most of the road department equipment is stored outside.

"We have $1 million worth of equipment that has to be stored outside. This will allow us to get it inside a building," Fee said.

Trustees have approved $340,000 in American Rescue Plan funds and other funding for the project.

Road supervisor Shawn Davis said the company is expected to begin work on the building in mid-December and complete it by the end of February. Fee said the building also will have an area for storing township documents and materials.

Trustees agreed the top of the building will be light gray and the bottom will be a charcoal color.

In other business, fire Chief Tom Dempsey said the fire department, in partnership with the American Red Cross, will have smoke detectors available to the public with a limit of three per residential household. Dempsey said those needing smoke detectors can contact the fire department because fire staff will install them.

Also, police Chief Larry Skaggs said he will ask school officials if a police dog could be used to help with drug searches or other purposes, as needed. The department does not have its own police dog, but Skaggs said one could be borrowed from another department if needed.

Trustees also are researching the costs to get a sign for the entrance of the cemetery and an LED sign at the township building to better inform the community of events. Trustee Bill Templeton said ARP funds could be used to cover the cost.

Dempsey said a wireless emergency notification system, through the Trumbull County Emergency Management Agency, is available to the public for notifications, including alerts for severe weather, water main breaks, road closures, boil alerts or evacuation procedures.
