LORDSTOWN -- The village police department has added two part-time auxiliary officers to its ranks with plans also to add a full-time officer.
Village council on Monday approved Mayor Arno Hill's appointments of Christopher Carusso and Justin O'Rourke as auxiliary officers.
Police Chief Brent Milhoan said the department is losing Dan Peterson, a part-time auxiliary police officer, who is retiring this month from Warren Township Police Department to take a position with the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office and is not allowed dual commissions.
Milhoan said two part-time police dispatchers, Tiffany Alberini and Thomas Watson, also are leaving. He said the department has a full-time chief, nine full-time officers and three part-time auxiliary members.
The streets and grounds department also is getting additional staff with the hirings of Dean Fender and Dwayne Richmond as full-time workers and truck drivers in the maintenance department.
ADDRESSING STRUCTURES
In other business, Kellie Bordner, planning / zoning administrator, said she and fire Chief Travis Eastham have been in contact with officials from the Trumbull County Land Bank, Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership and Trumbull County Combined Health Department in determining that six structures in the village are unfit for human habitation and declared nuisances.
Bordner said the goal is to remove the structures through demolitions covered by grant funding and any other money needed will be collected from liens placed on the property.
Properties declared unsafe and structurally defective and unfit for human habitation are at 8933 Tod Ave. SW, 8831 Tod Ave. SW, 7108 Highland Ave. SW, 4967 Tod Ave. SW, 939 Tait Road and 6278 Tod Ave. SW.
Council also:
• Heard from village engineer Chris Kogelnik that he has been in contact with U.S. Rep. David Joyce's office to try to secure additional funding for waterline and water-related projects on state Route 45.
• Announced tree lighting will be 6 p.m. Nov. 17 at the park by the fire department off Salt Springs Road.
• Received $7,158 from the OneOhio opioid settlement.
