HUBBARD TOWNSHIP — Longtime trustee Frederick Hanley was defeated in Tuesday’s general election by political newcomer Jason Tedrow.
Unofficial results from the Trumbull County Board of Elections had Tedrow receiving 51% of the vote with Hanley receiving 49%.
Tedrow said he ran for trustee 10 years ago and credits Tuesday’s success to the support he received from family, friends and the community.
“From the vote totals, a lot more people were out voting in this election,” he said. “I appreciate the support from the community.”
Tedrow said he reached people through social media and informed the public about what he stood for and what his goals were.
Hanley was seeking his 10th four-year term.
Tedrow, who was running for the second time after losing a Hubbard trustee race in 2013, is not affiliated with a political party.
He said his first goal is to “increase transparency to the local government.”
“Although there have been vast improvements in the township transparency since the addition of Jennifer Evans as the fiscal officer and Bill Colletta as one of our three trustees, I want to expand upon that as much as possible,” he said. “This is so the residents can better monitor the spending of their tax dollars and be able to make more informed decisions in the future when they head to voting polls.”
He said his second goal is efficiently spending tax money and his third goal is to work on open-access programs and saving Coalburg Lake. He said he plans to work with the Ohio Community Reinvestment Area as his first program to allow residents to seek tax abatements to get help with fixing or improving their property.
He also plans to use the funds trustees received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to repair the Coalburg Dam rather than breaching it.
Tedrow, a senior electrical engineer, has held the career position of a manufacturing engineer and an area department lead. He said the skills he’s learned from his career as well as his life-learned skills will make him a “good fit” for the trustee position.
Hanley, a Democrat, said he was running for reelection because he “has enjoyed serving the citizens of his township and community.”
“In all these years, I have never missed a township trustee meeting,” he said. “I have never accepted any campaign or other donations.”
Some of his other accomplishments as a trustee prior to this election include doing away with landfills and waste brine in Hubbard Township and using Emergency Management Agency grants to purchase a township-wide tornado or disaster siren.
