HOWLAND -- Former assistant police Chief Frank J. Dillon is in the lead to take over former and longtime trustee Rick Clark's seat in a seven-person race Tuesday.
Dillon leads with 24.60% of the vote, while Julie Altawil is his next closest challenger at 24.44%. The two are seperated by just 10 votes, according to unofficial results from the Trumbull County Board of Elections.
"Thank you to the voters who supported and voted for me," Dillon said Tuesday night. "I plan to do everything that I said I was going to do, by working for the people, and getting whatever they need done, done."
Candidate Jack Finch Sr. said "Frank's a good guy. I've known him for a long time, and he's ging to make a great trustee. Thank you everyone for voting. I'll try again next year."
Finch captured 12% of the vote.
"The township is going to get a good trustee," Brian Baxter said. "I'm disappointed on my part, but we'll try again next year. Frank's been in the community for a very long time, he knows the system and should do great."
George Bakeris said the voters have spoken and it seems as if they don't want change. "Everything is going to stay the same way," he said. "The voters don't want change. They seem content with things, and that's all I can say."
Bakeris got 13% of the vote.
Former state representative Michael Verich got 14% of the vote, while Daniel Sferra Jr. got 7% and Brian Baxter got 4%.
Altawil, who serves as a Board of Education member, Verich and Sferra, superintendent of Warren City Water Distribution, did not respond to messages seeking comment.
Clark served for 30 years after first being elected in 1994. He announced in May that he would not seek reelection so he could enjoy retirement.
Incumbent candidate Tom Krispinsky maintained his seat as the township's fiscal officer.
