3 races require recount

Howland trustee race, Bristol and LaBrae levies still undecided

WARREN -- The Trumbull County Board of Elections certified the results of the Nov. 7 election on Tuesday and scheduled automatic recounts for three races.

The three races that qualified for automatic recounts were the Howland trustee race, which official results show Frank Dillon leading Julie Altawil 1,549 to 1,542, a seven-vote difference; the Bristol Township fire and EMS 2-mill, five-year additional levy, which has 508 votes for the levy and 504 votes against the levy, a four- vote difference, according to official results; and the LaBrae Local School District permanent improvement 3- mill, five-year replacement levy, which has 1,055 votes for the levy and 1,048 against the levy, a seven-vote difference, official results show.

Stephanie Penrose, elections board director, said there were no major changes during the certification of the votes after adding in absentee or provisional ballots.

"I don't believe anything actually changed, just the numbers, the margins may have changed slightly," she said.

Penrose said all three races are within the range needed for an automatic recount, which is a difference of less than one half of one percent between two candidates or issues.

"There is a formula in the book that we followed for each of these," Penrose said.

Penrose said a notice has to be given to the individuals involved within five days and that the recount has to be done within 10 days.

The board opted to schedule the recounts for the morning of Nov. 29. Votes for the Bristol Township levy will be counted at 9 a.m., followed by votes for the LaBrae levy at 9:45 a.m, and the votes for Howland trustee at 10:30 a.m.

LaBrae Superintendent Anthony Calderone asked if the recount would be done by hand, which Penrose confirmed.

"It is a hand recount," Penrose said. "If you decide to go further with it, we can then scan the ballot. Anybody is allowed to put an end to the recount if they feel satisfied with the recount."

Penrose said letters through certified mail would be sent to the representatives involved with the recount from LaBrae, Bristol and Howland. She said those invitied, such as Calderone, will be allowed to bring one observer.

"Representatives from either an issue, a levy or candidates are encouraged to attend," Board President Mark Alberini said.

The board also voted to hold the post-election audit directly after the recount.
