20 cases indicted by Trumbull grand jury
WARREN — A Trumbull County grand jury on Wednesday returned 20 indictments including one against a 36-year-old Girard man accused of vandalizing the historic Trumbull County Courthouse in October.
Christopher Gembicki, charged with fifth-degree vandalism, is alleged to have caused several thousand dollars worth of damage to each of the four first-floor windows.
Damage is estimated at $12,000 to $17,000 per window, according to a police incident report.
Gembicki, who has been in Trumbull County jail since turning himself in to Warren police the morning after the damage occurred, is believed to be the hooded man captured in Oct. 11 surveillance video smashing several windows with rocks from the fountain nearby.
The security video from outside of the courthouse shows a man wearing a dark-colored hoodie as he approaches the building’s east side near the Trumbull County Probate Court wing of the building.
He throws a rock into the window repeatedly, cracking the first panel of the double paned window but avoiding breaking the second panel that would’ve exposed the inside of the courthouse.
The man moved on to other windows of Probate Court Judge James A. Fredericka.
He later walks around the downtown square several times, including approaching the courthouse to inspect the damage.
Since the incident, the windows have been repaired.
A similar courthouse vandalism incident occurred in November 2021. Joanna McCane, 44, of Youngstown earlier this year was sentenced to five years of probation and $5,000 restitution for the damage she caused.
