WARREN -- Warren police arrested a man Thursday afternoon near North Park Avenue in response to a high number of gun and drug incidents being reported in the area.
Tarique McCray, 23, was charged with having weapons while not permitted because of a previous conviction and carrying a concealed weapon, according to a police report.
An officer observed a man in a red hooded sweatshirt covering his face with his arm walking into Gas Land while intentionally keeping his face hidden and body turned. The officer was watching him from the parking lot.
The officer observed what looked to be a heavy object in the man's sweatshirt pocket, which made it sag, a police report states. As the officer approached the man, later identified as McCray, he could see a bulge and what appeared to be a protrusion of iron sights to a handgun. The knobs to the iron sights were sticking through his pocket. The officer asked him if he had a gun in his pocket and the man said it was his phone, the report states.
The officer grew more certain that McCray was carrying a firearm and advised dispatch about the situation. McCray fled to the nearby Save-A-Lot parking lot when the officer asked him for his name, the report states.
The officer pulled out his gun and pointed it at McCray, ordering him to get on the ground. McCray complied and while he was on the ground, his pocket sagged open and the officer could clearly see a gun inside, the report states.
A loaded Glock 19 was found in his sweatshirt pocket and Mccray was transported to the Trumbull County jail.
