WARREN -- A Kentucky woman, who was impaired when driving speeds as high as 80 mph when she severely injured an elderly couple, was sentenced Thursday.
Sharon and William Burrows stood watching as Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Cynthia W. Rice handed down her sentence to Josephine Steele, 52.
After pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated vehicular assault and two counts of OVI, Rice sentenced Steele to serve 30 months in prison and lose her driver's license for 10 years.
Earlier this year, Steele rejected the plea deal that would have given her two nine-month sentences to be served consecutively for a total of 18 months behind bars.
Prosecutors state the case involves a Dec. 7, 2022, crash on West Market Street that severely injured a couple in their late 70s.
A police report states Steele admitted to police she was impaired at the time of the accident -- telling them, "you and I both know I'm (expletive) up. I'm not even sorry, (expletive) them old people, they can't even drive."
The night of the accident Steele had a blood-alcohol level of .31, nearly four times the legal limit of 0.08 to drive in Ohio.
Sharon Burrows' injuries included a cut to her leg and ankle bruises that required her to use a walker, a report stated. Her husband's injuries were more serious. He was hospitalized in intensive care for more than a month, facing multiple surgeries, before being moved to a long-term care facility on a ventilator.
