WHAT: Board of Education October meeting
PRESENT: Teresa Oakes, Tonya Kline, Amie Crowder, Carole Mazanetz Elliott and Chris Mazur
The Board:
• Scheduled a special meeting for 6 p.m. Monday at the high school where the board and the school food authority committee will review proposals from different companies for food service management.
• Approved an agreement with Huntington Learning Center for tutoring instruction for elementary and middle school students for 21 weeks at $66,150 paid by Title I funding.
• Heard from administrators of tutoring services for students to help with academic achievement improvements. Gjerg Haxhiu and Jillian Allen will be tutors for the after-school tutoring for high school and junior high students.
Officials said efforts are being put in place to address improving state report card scores.
The district received an overall rating of two stars with areas of improvements. School staff also is receiving additional training in different subject areas.
• Approved April 8, 2024, which is the total solar eclipse, as a calamity day and approval of three calamity days virtual makeup which replaced what previously known as blizzard bags. Superintendent Justin Christopher said many schools are either not having school or early dismissal on the day of the eclipse.
• Heard from parents who were concerned of the behavior of adults in the football stands at a school sporting event Sept. 15 and other dates yelling and making rude comments at varsity players which could be heard on the field.
Parents asked administrators what could be done about such behavior which is embarrassing and breaks stadium conduct guidelines. Oakes said school officials will look into and address the matter.
• Approved the disposal of obsolete equipment no longer needed such as broken and rusted chairs and cabinets, science lab faucets and sinks, and bus parts.
• Approved the Key Club trip to the Columbus Zoo on Oct. 28;.
• Approved the "Walk Warm" program 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 30 to May 17 at the K-5 Building with sign in of walkers required.
• Rescheduled the next meeting to 7 p.m. Nov. 15 due to the holidays.
