WARREN TOWNSHIP -- LaBrae's Bascom Elementary School kicked off its Scholastic Book Fair recently with the theme "Under the Sea. "
Maggie Kowach, school principal, dressed as Ursla from "Disney's The Little Mermaid"; Bascom librarian and chairwoman of the Book Fair, Stacey Biery, transformed herself into a mermaid; and the elementary counselor, Jason Diaz, became a scuba diver.
Youngstown State University's mascot, Pete the Penguin, also made an appearance.
Christine Cope, president of the Trumbull County United Way, presented a $1,000 check to add to other local business donations, including Woodford Excavating, The Cafaro Foundation, Miha Seals & Solutions Inc., CGK Enterprises Inc., and Quality Switch Inc. The donations ensure that all Bascom students in grades PK-2 are able to get a new book of their choice from the book fair.
Over the past nine years, Bascom has won several national awards from Scholastic for the school's decorations, incentives, programs and participation.
There also is a reading contest going on during the month of October.
The student who reads the most in each grade level will get to dunk the principal, dressed as Scuba Steve, into the dunk tank right after the PK-2 Halloween parade in the Bascom front parking lot. The parade will start at 10 a.m. Friday. Winners also will receive aquariums and a fish donated by Pet Supplies Plus.
