BROOKFIELD -- Jenna Omar recently saved her best friend's life during a lunchroom emergency at Brookfield Middle School.
Jenna jumped into action when she saw her friend, 13-year-old Luciana Kolat, choking on a piece of breaded shrimp on Sept. 22.
Jenna began performing the Heimlich Maneuver on Luciana, who couldn't breathe, was gagging and her face was turning blue.
Luciana said Jenna saved her life.
Jenna originally was supposed to miss lunch that day for a doctor's appointment that was canceled at the last minute.
Both of the girls' parents are in the medical field. Jenna's mother taught her CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver.
Both of their parents said they feel children their age should be taught both life-saving measures.
The principal did notice the incident, but by the time he reached their table, Jenna already had saved Luciana.
She was examined by the school nurse after the principal took her to the office, but she was safe and healthy aside from a sore throat and some dizziness.
The incident was captured on school security cameras.
Both girls are in 7th grade and have been friends since they were 4.
They both are on student council and are involved in basketball, volleyball and softball.
