Christian Chaney of Struthers takes plea deal in death of Adam Spaid

WARREN -- A jury trial will be avoided for an 18-year-old Struthers man who accepted a plea deal and was sentenced for his role in the Feb. 5 attempted robbery-turned-shooting death of Adam Spaid, 28.
The night of Spaid's death, Christian Chaney stood at the door of the victim's Milton Street SE residence holding an orange Grub Hub delivery bag as a ruse to lure out the occupants. Soon after, Chaney and three other men forced entry into the home where the deadly shooting of Spaid occurred.
Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Andrew D. Logan on Tuesday sentenced Chaney to 13 to 18 years in state prison as his mother watched from the gallery. Afterward, Chaney will be placed on five years post-release control.
On Feb. 17, Chaney, who was 17 at the time, was charged with aggravated murder, aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery -- all with firearm specifications.
In exchange for his plea, the charge of aggravated murder was amended to involuntary manslaughter and both sides negotiated to merge three firearm specifications into one.
Chaney is one of two men who have been convicted in the shooting death of Spaid.
The man who police say pulled the trigger, Ronieque Requel of Youngstown, was found guilty of two counts of aggravated murder, one count of aggravated robbery, one count of aggravated burglary and one count of intimidation -- all with firearm specifications; plus one count of receiving stolen property and one count of not being allowed to have a weapon.
Jury deliberations took about an hour in determining Requel's guilt.
