MASURY -- An overnight standoff in Masury ended peacefully after only an hour.
Police took a 58-year-old man into custody -- after he told police he was finishing smoking a cigarette.
Gary Hackett, of Lucy Street, was apprehended without incident after the standoff that drew police from Brookfield, Vienna, Hubbard and Sharon, Pa. Authorities contacted the Mahoning Valley and Mercer County crisis response teams but their assistance wasn't needed given Hackett's quick surrender.
The woman who reported Hackett to police told dispatch that earlier that day he held a gun to her stomach, assaulted her, pushed her down and took her purse.
She was able to escape the home and sought refuge at the former Knights of Columbus building across the street.
Dispatch was advised by the woman that Hackett was "all cracked out" and wanting more drugs. She also advised that he was armed with several firearms -- including a handgun she said he was holding when she left the apartment.
A perimeter was created by police around the apartment but authorities decided not to approach the front door.
Initial attempts by police to reach Hackett were unsuccessful. Eventually police were able to convince him that the best outcome was to come out of the apartment.
Hackett told police he would finish his cigarette then surrender at the back door.
He came out with his hands in the air and was taken into custody, and later questioned by Brookfield police.
A search of the home led to the discovery of two shotguns and a handgun.
Hackett admitted to police that he had been drinking and smoking cocaine before the standoff began, according to the report.
He said that he was only trying to get his money back from the woman and that's why he grabbed her purse.
Hackett was taken into the Trumbull County jail as he awaits a court hearing this morning on charges of assault, having weapons while intoxicated and obstructing official business.
