WARREN -- A Niles man who refused to allow a woman to leave his apartment in an altercation that left her shoulder broken struggled through tears reading an apology letter before sentencing.
Denny Lee Adkins, 44, was sentenced to two to three years in prison, with 200 days worth of credit for time served at the Trumbull County jail.
Sentencing in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court came about six months after the Jan. 13 incident inside an apartment complex in the 5400 block of East Drive in Niles.
A caller told police Adkins was refusing to allow her friend to leave the residence and later assaulted her, causing her shoulder to be broken in two places.
Adkins was charged with second-degree felonious assault and accepted a plea deal in May after pleading guilty. Prompted to speak Monday, Adkins clutched the letter he wrote to the woman, fighting back tears.
"I want you to know I'm terribly sorry that you were hurt that day. I never meant to hurt you and never want to hurt you," he said.
She was not in court.
Adkins told the court that he was ready to take "full responsibility" for his actions and asked Judge Cynthia Rice to allow him to use any types of rehabilitation programs made available to him.
Rice told Adkins that she could see his apology is sincere and advised him to ensure the letter makes it to the woman.
