Liberty shooting victim dies year later

Unknown if death of Zach Woods is result of injuries suffered

WARREN — Trumbull County prosecutors said that further charges could be considered for the Youngstown man serving 68 to 73 1/2 years attempted murder and other felonies in a June 10, 2022, rush-hour shootout with police at a busy Liberty intersection.

The victim in that shooting, Zach Woods, who was 20 at the time, has died. However, it is unknown if his death is the result of the shooting.

If the county coroner’s office determines his May 26 death was the result of the shooting, additional charges may be considered against Kevin Mallard, 56, according to county Assistant Prosecutor Michael Burnett.

On Feb, 21, Mallard, of Manhattan Avenue, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and inducing panic with firearm specifications, inducing panic, improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle, carrying concealed weapons and three additional counts of attempted murder with firearm specifications.

It was nearly one year ago, on June 10, 2022, when Mallard shot Woods in the head as he was sitting in his car at a red light in front of Mallard. At his sentencing hearing in March, Mallard could not give a reason for shooting Woods, who suffered major facial and eye injuries and was partially blinded.

Witnesses said there was no sign of road rage prior to the shooting.

Mallard’s indictment stated he walked back to his Humvee after the shooting and drove off. Police officers responding to the shooting, however, stopped the Humvee and a shootout began — with dozens of shots fired along East Liberty Street near the Interstate 80 interchange.

The roads were closed for several hours after the shooting while investigators searched for spent shells.

Defense attorney Heather Ninni said at Mallard’s sentencing that he had told her “a voice inside him” told him to approach Woods’ car after it was weaving in and out of traffic. Ninni said Mallard told her he thought Woods was going to pull a gun.

However, investigators didn’t find a firearm in Woods’ car.

Burnett said that further charges for Mallard have not been considered yet. He said murder charges could be a possibility based on what is found in Woods’ autopsy report.

The coroner’s office said that Woods’ autopsy is complete, but it is waiting on results of the toxicology report, and it will not be able to determine Woods’ cause of death for another three to four weeks.
