NEWTON FALLS -- Newton Falls school district Treasurer Terry Armstrong is leaving to become treasurer for Cardinal Local Schools in Geauga County.
Armstrong, who submitted his resignation Tuesday, will be leaving July 16. He started with the district in January 2022.
School officials are seeking a new treasurer and are working with the Trumbull County Educational Service Center to find a replacement. Applications are being accepted through June 9.
Armstrong will begin in Cardinal on July 17. He will replace Seth Cales, who has served as treasurer. Cales has accepted a position with Kenston schools in Chagrin Falls.
"I am excited to be headed to Cardinal Local Schools in Middlefield and continue the progress they have made fiscally as a district," Armstrong said.
The district includes Middlefield Village, Middlefield Township and Huntsburg and Parkman townships.
Armstrong said he will be able to close out the current fiscal year in Newton Falls at the end of June and plan for a smooth transition to the new treasurer at Newton Falls.
"Newton Falls has made a great turnaround fiscally the past year and a half, but only through difficult decisions being supported by the board of education," he said.
He said the five-year forecast demonstrates the decisions have greatly improved the school district's financial position.
Armstrong said that while last year the district was in deficit spending, this year it will add more than $500,000 to the general fund carryover balance.
He told the board at a recent meeting the district will need to continue to maximize revenue opportunities, scrutinize all new and existing vendor contracts, utilize nongeneral fund revenue to meet as many obligations as possible and continue to right-size the district through reducing personnel through attrition.
Since 2018, the new treasurer will be the sixth for the school district.
