School board proceeds with levy

Brookfield district plans to put 2.3 mills on Nov. ballot

BROOKFIELD -- The board of education is proceeding with placing a permanent improvement levy on the November ballot.

Treasurer Jordan Weber said the district is seeking a 2.3-mill, five-year permanent improvement levy that would generate funds for improvements to buildings and properties. He said the county auditor will certify the millage to generate about $337,000 annually.

The board will give a second reading at the June board meeting for official placement on the Nov. 7 ballot.

In other business, the board adjusted the school calendar for 2023-24 because of work being done on the middle school floor that is uneven. Weber said with an additional 15 minutes added to each school day, students will attend 169 days.

Weber said the school day was extended so the district can start after Labor Day while work is being done on the middle school. Work is expected to be completed by late August.

Since school begins after Labor Day, the last day of school was set for May 31, 2024.

The middle school remediation project is being done through the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission.

The school district said it noticed cracking in the floor and walls of the middle school shortly after the school opened in 2011. A 2013 attempted fix did not work, school officials have said.

The middle school students went remote on May 19 as work began in the middle school hallway by Schirmer Construction.

The board, at its May meeting, also approved administrative contracts.

• Jeri Hamilton was granted a three-year, 215-day contract as pupil services supervisor at $80,719 for 2023-24, $81,971 for 2024-25, $83,222 for the 2025-26 year;

• Stacey Filicky as elementary principal on a three-year, 215-day contract at $81,971 for 2023-24, $82,597 for 2024-25, and $83,848 for 2025-26;

• Craig Boles as middle school principal on a three-year, 215-day contract at $81,971 in 2023-24 and 2024-45 and $83,222 for the 2025-26 year;

• Joshua Vastag as middle school assistant principal on a three-year, 215-day contract at $74,462 for 2023-24 and $75,714 for 2024-25.

In other action, the board:

• Accepted the resignation of Tyler Vallinger as assistant high school principal effective July 31;

• Accepted the retirement resignation of Linda Bain, art teacher, with 26 years in the district at the end of the school year;

• Approved an agreement with Ohio Auditor of State's Local Government Services to compile annual financial statements at $75 per hour;

• Approved a shared services agreement with EduTech Group to provide shared technology services at $80,000 for 12 months;

• Approved an agreement with Hope Center for Art and Technology, which is an after-school program for grades seventh to 12th at no cost to the district.
