HUBBARD -- City officials are hoping to secure $250,000 for residential housing improvements as the city is joining Cortland, Girard and Niles in sharing the available Community Housing Impact and Preservation Program funds.
CHIP provides funding to improve and provide affordable housing for low- and moderate-income citizens. CHIP funds are distributed in one competitive funding round per year.
Eligible applicants can submit only one application per round.
The program is through the Ohio Development Services Agency.
Mayor Ben Kyle said he met recently with the mayors of Cortland, Girard and Niles to discuss the CHIP program, of which the city has been a part for many years.
"We discussed funding for ongoing projects and home renovations that people have been able to obtain as part of the program. We are planning another cooperative agreement with Niles, Cortland and Girard with our share to be made available for our local residents who want to make needed home repairs," Kyle told city council last week.
He said the information and requirements for the CHIP program will be made available for interested residents.
Councilman-at-Large Jerry Crowe requested legislation be prepared for the next meeting on June 5 to approve a CHIP partnership with Cortland, Girard and Niles.
Kyle said the $250,000 is the same amount the city has received in the past few cycles.
In other business, the city is proceeding with entering into a contract with Kirila Contractors Inc. of Brookfield contingent upon receiving Ohio Public Works Commission funding for the 2023 street improvement project.
The city has been working with MS Consultants Inc. of Youngstown, which recommended Kirila Contractors be awarded the contract of $276,136.
Streets to be paved this year are: Parkview Drive from Tulip to Melody; Moore Street from Elmwood to Gary; Sixth Avenue from Church to Prescott; West Water Street from Stewart to North Main; Scott Street from Grandview to Christian; and miscellaneous repairs.
Alternative streets are: Parkview Drive from the dead end to Hager Street, and Hall Avenue from Scott Street to school bus garage driveway.
The street contract is scheduled to be given a final reading by council at the June 5 meeting.
