NEWTON FALLS -- The top two vote-getters in the races for mayor and the Newton Falls 1st and 2nd wards will appear on the November ballot as per the village charter.
In the mayor's race in Tuesday's primary, David Hanson received 54 percent of the vote to incumbent Kenneth Kline, who received 46 percent of the vote, according to unofficial and incomplete results from the Trumbull County Board of Elections.
Stephanie Penrose, director of the board of elections, said the top two candidates in the race move on to the general election, so Hanson and Kline will have a rematch in November.
Kline has served as mayor for one term, since 2020. Hanson is marking his first time seeking election to the mayor's post, having run in the 1980s for Newton Township trustee.
COUNCIL RACES
In the 1st Ward race, four candidates were seeking to fill the council seat. Unofficial and incomplete results from the board of elections had Patricia Benetis with 43 percent of the vote, Michael Kren with 27 percent, Julie Lemon with 20 percent and Jaime Kline with 9 percent. Benetis and Kren will advance to the November election.
Current 1st Ward Councilman Gideon "Bud" Fetterolf will not seek re-election. He was named to fill the term of Michael Serotko, who stepped down in 2022.
In the 2nd Ward race, three candidates were seeking to fill the ward seat on village council.
Unofficial and incomplete results from the board of elections had Brian Axiotis receiving 40 percent of the vote, Condie Bright with 33 percent and Tracy Hurst with 27 percent.
Axiotis and Bright will advance to the general election.
Current 2nd Ward Councilman John Baryak will not be returning as he has met his term limit.
