YSU police sergeant dies over the weekend

YOUNGSTOWN -- A Youngstown State University police sergeant died at his home over the weekend.

For 20 years, William Alvin Mays Jr., 45, of Columbiana, served on the YSU police force. Before joining the university police, he was a graduate of East Liverpool High School and the YSU Criminal Justice program.

A funeral and visitation will take place Saturday at Care Funeral & Cremation Specialists-Martin Chapel in Calcutta.

A Facebook post from YSU stated "It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our sergeant, William Mays. Thank you for your many years of service and dedication to our community. You will be deeply missed!"

YSU Student Government Association also responded on social media: "It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Student Government Association extends our deepest condolences to the friends and family of Sergeant William A. Mays Jr. of our own Youngstown State University Police Department. Sergeant Mays was loved by many, and will be deeply missed."
