WEATHERSFIELD -- The Weathersfield Township trustees on Tuesday approved several allocations of donations to local veterans and first-responder groups to decorate graves ahead of Memorial Day.
The trustees gave $300 to the Mineral Ridge VFW Post 4192. Trustee Steve Gerberry said the group goes to several local cemeteries, but the biggest is Kerr Cemetery on Salt Springs Youngstown Road.
The Godard American Legion will receive $100 from the township. Gerberry said the group decorates graves at the Welsh Hill Cemetery in McDonald, which has a lot of Weathersfield veterans in it. He said even though it is not a Weathersfield group, the trustees still found it important to help them out.
"These are things we've done for several years and are important to us as it is to them. I think it's a great program, and I'm glad we're able to do it again," trustee Richard Harkins said.
The trustees also approved a $100 donation to the Mineral Ridge Volunteer Fire Department to decorate the graves of former Weathersfield firefighters who have died. Gerberry said the group not only decorates graves in cemeteries in Weathersfield, but its members also go to different areas outside the township to decorate these graves.
The trustees also reminded residents to remove decorations from all cemeteries by April 30 so they can be cleaned for the spring.
In other action, the board:
• Reminded residents that open burning is not permitted in the township. The fire department received a handful of calls about brush fires on Tuesday alone;
• Authorized the township administrator to enter into a software license agreement with Affidavit Maker Software LLC of Springfield for a cost of $600. The one-year renewal is for the software that allows Weathersfield police officers to file charges with Niles Municipal Court;
• Authorized the township administrator to renew the township's membership with the Ohio Department of Administrative Services General Services Division Office of Cooperative Purchasing at a cost of $100;
• Authorized the township administrator to enter into a one-year agreement for management services with Sedgwick of Cleveland for a cost of $1,620;
• Authorized the township administrator to participate in the Trumbull County engineer's 2023-24 winter fill program for rock salt;
• Authorized the law director to file a brief on behalf of the township in the appeal of AWMS Water Solutions, LLC vs. Mary Mertz, Director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management a lawsuit which has been appealed to the Ohio Supreme Court.
