WARREN -- When school staff were cleaning out the former Warren G. Harding High School, a 100-pound bronze plaque with military personnel from 1943 was found, and district officials plan to present it to the Trumbull CountyVeterans Services Commission.
John Lacy, director of business operations for Warren city schools, told the board of education Tuesday he spoke with William Kush who was head of maintenance and facilities for the schools for many years about the plaque.
Lacy said he learned from Kush the plaque originated from the Warren Harding June Class of 1943 and the local American Legion and is called "A Salute to Youth."
The plaque was created by Warren Harding student Richard Downs, who later served in the U.S. Navy.
At the bottom of the plaque is the message "One Equal Temper of Heroic Hearts" from a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson.
Lacy showed a yearbook from 1943 that featured a picture of the plaque with miliary personnel around it. The entry was of an Armistice Day program sponsored by the June 1943 Class with representatives of the local American Legion. The program recognized the men and women in military service.
"The plaque was dedicated to students who left high school early or who upon graduation served in the military during World War II," Lacy said.
School officials have decided to give the plaque to the Trumbull County Veterans Services Commission to display at their building in downtown Warren.
Lacy said the schools will be part of the city's Memorial Day ceremony where the presentation can be made.
"This can be shown at their building downtown and be viewed by veterans and others," Lacy said.
Superintendent Steve Chiaro said the school district will loan the plaque to the veterans administration indefinitely.
Lacy said he spoke with Herm Breuer, director of TrumbulA6County Veterans Services, about finding the plaque.
"It is appropriate that we give this to the veterans to display," Lacy said.
