Niles announces $1.57 million in resurfacing

NILES -- The city announced streets that will be part of its $1.57 million resurfacing project this year.

City council approved the plan Wednesday.

Funding sources are approximately $850,000 of local dollars, $150,000 in Ohio Public Works Commission grant funds and $575,000 in federal grant funds.

The following streets are expected to be resurfaced this summer:

• Fairlawn Avenue from North Road to end;

• Old Forge Road from Frederick Street to Mill Creek Road;

• Potomac Avenue from North Road to Drive;

• North Rhodes Avenue from Robbins Avenue to Taft Avenue;

• North Cleveland Avenue from Robbins Avenue to Clinton Street;

• Spruce Street from Roosevelt Avenue to end;

• McDonald Avenue from Robbins Avenue to James Street;

• Kearney Street from Hogarth Avenue to Hazel Street;

• Belle Terre Avenue from Robbins Avenue to state Route 422;

• High Avenue from Mason Street to end;

• Cedar Avenue from Robbins Avenue to state Route 46;

• Cherry Avenue from Robbins Avenue to end;

• Peffer Avenue from Mason Street to end;

• Helen Avenue from North Main Street to Dragon Drive;

• Fourth Street from Nebraska Avenue to end;

• West Second Street from Ward Avenue to South Main Street;

• Dakota Avenue from West Third Street to Fifth Street;

• Clover Avenue from Warren Avenue to West Park Avenue;

• North Road from North Main Street to state Route 422.

Also at Wednesday's meeting, city council approved an ordinance authorizing the service director to advertise for bids and enter into contracts for the resurfacing of Heaton North Road. Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz said this is a state route, so Niles has to fund only 20 percent of the $725,000 project.

Mientkiewicz also noted that after city officials spoke with the Ohio Department of Transportation, the department agreed to move up the resurfacing of state Route 46 and state Route 169 in Niles to next year. The mayor said the projects originally were slated for 2026.
