HUBBARD -- After two consecutive weekends with severe weather that caused power outages and downed trees and power lines, Mayor Ben Kyle is encouraging residents who want emergency notifications to contact his office.
Kyle said at Monday's council meeting that the city, as well as the entire Mahoning Valley, have been hit by storms that have caused a lot of damage on March 25 and Saturday.
He said credit has to be given to safety forces and city utility workers for all the work they have done to help with removing fallen trees and electrical lines.
Kyle said the city worked with FirstEnergy this past weekend as many residents in the city had no power for 24 hours. He said FirstEnergy officials informed him that a main transmission line had issues following the storm.
FirstEnergy linemen restored power on the main transmission line, and city electric crews then restored numerous locations. Most residents had their power restored by late Sunday.
Officials said they are concerned if more intense storms happen this spring and summer. Because of all the branches that have fallen since the storm, the city street department is providing a special branch pickup this week and next. No residential trees will be removed.

Also Monday, police Chief Bob Thompson said a meeting took place between Hubbard police and the board of education to provide parents updates on what has been done to keep children safe in the schools with recent lockdowns caused by a threat. The informational meeting was at the high school.
The schools had a lockdown on March 14, and Thompson said the school staff and students did what they were trained to do and that is why everything went well and students were kept safe.
Safety Director Bill Bancroft said he has spoken with school officials about an after-action review of the incident.
